I have listed all the books I know
to this day that is about women that loves women. Why I have devided Lesbian and
Gay Literature is because they do not follow the same history. Lesbian
Literature started to really flourish in the late 2000th Century. Even if there
always have been many womyn authors, and there are important authors that are
believed to have been lesbian before the 20th Century, like the Swedish author
Selma Lagerlöf, the lesbian lifestyle was not portrayed by lesbians as such. In
the middle of the 20th Century for example there was a boom where many erotic
stories about lesbians started to be produced, but this wasn't really for
lesbians themselves but rather for heterosexual men, and written by
heterosexuals. But Lesbian literature has been around a few decades before that,
Well of Loneliness (1928), is seen by many as the start, but it was produced
40 years after the first gay novel saw its light. The same year Virginia
Woolf's Orlando came, in more disguised ways was portraying a woman that
was bisexual/transsexual or sexless. Lots of Gertrude Stein's work was also very
easily interpretated as lesbian literature.
